Nancy Lorenz is an artist whose work combines post-war abstraction with materials and techniques from Asian and Western craft traditions. The resulting tension that this talented artist creates in her works between traditional compositional concerns as well as the patterns that naturally occur in nature is the driving force in all of her works. Lorenz is an accomplished artist who is able to balance these ideas in order to create opulent works of striking beauty. Nancy Lorenz lived in Japan for five years and later worked as a restorer of lacquer antiques. She combines her knowledge and skills of Asian arts, materials, and craftsmanship to create unique artworks with highly refined and textural surfaces as is the case with our example. Her pictures evoke a timelessness as well as a feeling of limitless space, as the fireworks seem to extend beyond the painting’s surface. Layers of such various materials as mother-of-pearl, pigment, gesso, and shellac combine to create a stunning and visually dynamic creation.
Lorenz is an accomplished artist able to create opulent works of striking beauty, as in our Fireworks, composed of mother-of-Pearl and striking pigments, all designed to impart the feeling of an exploding firework display.
