Artist

Vic Muniz (b. 1961) is a Brazilian contemporary artist celebrated for his inventive use of unconventional materials to create large-scale photographic works that question perception, representation, and reality. Born in São Paulo, Muniz studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he developed his signature approach: constructing intricate images from everyday materials, including chocolate syrup, garbage, dust, wire, and thread. These objects are meticulously arranged and then photographed, transforming ephemeral materials into enduring artworks.

Muniz’ work spans photography, sculpture, and installation, often incorporating themes of social commentary, memory, and the art historical canon. His projects, such as recreating famous paintings using nontraditional materials, explore the dialogue between image and substance, challenging viewers’ assumptions about medium and meaning.

His works have been shown in major institutions globally, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the São Paulo Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Muniz has received international acclaim for his inventive approach and his ability to transform the mundane into striking visual narratives.
