Description
Although Humphriss made his home in on the East Coast, the inspiration for his sculptures clearly drew from the American West, sparked by numerous journeys from New York to the western frontier. Between 1905 and the end of his life, Humphriss focused on creating works that captured the spirit and life of the "Old West."
The Old Soldier exudes a regal presence, enhanced by his wistful gaze, which not only seems to pierce the viewer but also appears to look beyond them, as if focused on some more significant matter in the distance. This sculpture stands as a prime example of Humphriss' artistic skill. The precision of his lines, the accuracy in anatomical details, and his attention to elements such as the soldier's clothing, gun, and bugle all contribute to the bronze’s refined elegance.
Our sculpture was cast by the Roman Bronze Works of New York, one of the leading foundries at the time and has an exceptional patina that distinguishes it from other casts.
