Artist

Cornelis van Poelenburch (1594–1667) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque period, renowned for his small-scale landscapes populated with mythological, biblical, and allegorical figures. Born in Utrecht, he trained in the local tradition of Dutch landscape painting and was influenced by the Italianate style after traveling to Rome in the early 1620s.

During his time in Italy, van Poelenburch absorbed the warm light, classical ruins, and pastoral settings that would characterize his mature work. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he developed a distinctive approach that combined finely detailed figures with lush, idealized landscapes. His paintings often feature nymphs, shepherds, and other classical motifs, set in serene natural settings with reflective water and soft, harmonious lighting.

Van Poelenburch’s work was widely admired in his lifetime, attracting commissions from Dutch collectors and patrons abroad. He was also an influential teacher, mentoring a generation of painters who carried forward the Italianate landscape tradition in the Netherlands. His delicate brushwork, poetic sensibility, and elegant compositions ensure his place among the notable Dutch Golden Age painters.
