Artist

Christine Hayman (b. 1950) is an American visual artist whose work reflects a lifelong engagement with music, performance, and the natural world. Trained early as a classical pianist, Hayman’s sensibilities were shaped by her immersion in theater and dance at the Conservatories of Music in Cincinnati and Baltimore, experiences that continue to inform the rhythm, movement, and compositional balance evident in her paintings.

Hayman earned a BA in Art History from the University of Maryland and later pursued a second degree in Art at the University of Reno, Nevada, where she began her formal exploration of painting. From that point, she developed a deeply personal visual language characterized by a sensitivity to light, form, and the subtle interplay between natural environments and human experience. Her surroundings, particularly her farm in Northern California, provide ongoing inspiration; the presence of livestock, expansive landscapes, and seasonal changes are reflected in the emotive, often contemplative qualities of her work.

Over the course of her career, Hayman has been widely recognized for her contributions to contemporary painting. Her work is included in more than forty public collections, demonstrating broad institutional acknowledgment of her artistic achievements. Beginning in 1980, she participated in over ninety group exhibitions and has been the subject of fourteen solo exhibitions, a testament to her sustained creative output and professional engagement with the art world.

Hayman’s practice blends disciplined observation with lyrical expression, often drawing parallels between the structured rhythms of music and the fluidity of visual composition. By integrating elements of natural observation, musical influence, and painterly experimentation, she has cultivated a distinctive voice in American art. Today, Christine Hayman continues to create and exhibit work that celebrates the interconnections between landscape, animal life, and the quiet harmonies found within both.
