Sam Gilliam was a groundbreaking American abstract artist best known for revolutionizing the medium of painting. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, he became a central figure in the Washington, D.C. art scene and a key voice in the Washington Color School, though his work ultimately broke free from its constraints.

In the mid-1960s, Gilliam developed his signature drape paintings, unstretched canvases stained with vivid color and hung freely in space. These works blurred the line between painting and sculpture, redefining the canvas as a dynamic, three-dimensional form. While rooted in abstraction, his work subtly reflected the social and political energy of the Civil Rights era.

Gilliam earned his degrees from the University of Louisville and spent much of his career in Washington, D.C. Over time, he expanded into layered constructions and public commissions, receiving growing recognition late in life. His death in 2022 marked the end of a singular career devoted to pushing the boundaries of art.

Description

H Series #35 is part of Gilliam's experiments with materials and form, reflecting his broader practice of combining painting and sculptural elements, inspired by improvisational jazz and his interest in pushing the boundaries of Color Field painting and Abstract Expressionism. H Series #35 is a mixed media collage using polypropylene, acrylic, and paper, featuring a unique raked texture with stitching. The raking technique creates a textured, sculptural surface by pulling and scraping paint across the flexible polypropylene material and the stitching binds together disparate painted or dyed pieces of polypropylene or canvas into a cohesive whole, creating quilt-like surfaces. Gilliam’s adoption of these methods emerged from his desire to transcend the flat, framed painting and produce works that physically and visually engage spatially. Together, these elements highlight Gilliam’s innovations in expanding the material and conceptual possibilities of abstract art.
