Poncet is an abstract sculptor in the tradition of Jean Arp and Constantin Brancusi.  Many of Poncet’s forms are derived from nature and are pared down to display the beauty or voluptuousness of a form or the essence of a movement. His sculpture shows distinct similarities to the work of Jean Arp, with whom Poncet worked closely from 1953-1955.

Poncet believes that movement is essential in good sculpture, and he strives for a breathless balance in his work, so that as you look at it, you feel that with a gentle push, the piece would fall. As Poncet explained:

The movement is essential in my quest. Everything is moving in nature, in life. We must go all the way, trying to search the balance. Maintaining this balance is essential for the sculpture…

Description

A unique piece in white marble, Tirelyre is the personification of a sensuous, somewhat provocative, study in fluid form, which appears to open like a budding flower warmed by the embracing sunshine and warmth. Its abstract shape suggests such an organic inspiration, while its striking simplicity allows it to read as simultaneously graceful and voluptuous. A quintessential example of Poncet’s mature sculptural designs, Tirelyre is elegantly carved and sensitively balanced, featuring inner negative spaces that contribute to its sensuality, while concurrently achieving a seamless integration with its surroundings. The sculpture is also reminiscent of works by Jean Arp, with whom Poncet worked closely from 1953-1955. Believing that movement is essential in good sculpture, Poncet strives for a breathless balance in his work and has unquestionably succeeded in Tirelyre. As he explains:

The movement is essential in my quest. Everything is moving in nature, in life. We must go all

the way, trying to search the balance. Maintaining this balance is essential for the sculpture…

Poncet is an abstract sculptor in the tradition of Jean Arp and Constantin Brancusi. He has had a solid career with many monumental works placed in public forums and a very cohesive body of mid-size works in primarily polished bronze and marble. This piece comes from the estate of Bryan Pearson, the first mayor of Iqaluit, capital of Nunavut. Originally from Liverpool, he passed in late 2016 at age 82. He is remembered as one of the most colorful characters in the city
