This untitled work from 1968 reveals Frost’s commitment to the interplay between color and shape. Deriving his compositions from the macro – the sky and the sea – he also references more tangible, reachable objects and places such as the boats and harbors along paths where he walked. In Untitled 1968, two distinct shapes arrive at the center of the composition, in tangent, each deriving it’s own bold personality through complimentary color. Often Frost composed abstract shapes in vibrant, playful, whimsical arrangements resulting in a sense of movement across an otherwise static surface which stimulates the senses.
Perhaps what is most profound is the play between negative and positive space, partition and tension. Frost’s consciousness of space and geometry are on display as his knowledge of color theory though ultimately it is Frost’s separation of thought and organization of ideas that dictates the execution of the drawing.
