Pecis is a Los Angeles–based contemporary painter known for vivid still lifes, interiors, and landscapes that transform ordinary scenes, flowers on a table, rooftops, sunlit hillsides, into vibrant, pattern-rich compositions.
Description
During her time at California College of the Arts, Hilary Pecis developed a distinctive visual language grounded in material experimentation and compositional play. Her early works from 2008, including Untitled #32, reveal a fascination with layering, texture, and the collision of found imagery. In these abstract collages, Pecis assembled fragments of paper, magazine clippings, spray paint, and ink into dense, visually charged compositions. Untitled #32 in particular captures a sense of visual overload—fragmented yet cohesive, atmospheric yet grounded. While her surfaces may initially appear flat, closer inspection reveals a nuanced topography, where every object and pattern carries its own weight and spatial logic. The result is a work that feels both contemporary and otherworldly, mirroring the fragmented rhythms of modern life.
