Description

Squares exemplify Yrisarry’s affinity for geometric abstraction and precise, flat color planes. The use of acrylic on canvas allows for bold, solid hues and sharp edges, which are central to his hard-edged approach. As the title suggests, the work features a composition dominated by squares, arranged in a way that stimulates visual perception—inviting viewers to consider relationships between shape, color, and space.

Mario Yrisarry is a Filipino American artist associated with the Op Art and Hard-Edge painting movements. He is known for his precise shapes, vibrant colors, and explorations of geometric abstraction. Yrisarry's work often reflects a refined approach to color, symmetry, and visual rhythm, characteristic of American geometric painting in the mid-20th century. His Filipino heritage and American art education contribute to a unique synthesis in his works.

A. Conger Goodyear, a successful businessman was a philanthropist and avid collector who was a founding member and first president of the Museum of Modern Art. Squares, by Mario Yrisarry, was originally purchased by the A. Conger Goodyear Fund (Buffalo Art Museum) which was established shortly before Goodyear’s death.
