Description
In the Flower Fields reflects Herrmann’s academic realism, painted during a pivotal year in Herrmann’s career. By 1895, Herrman had honed his artistic skills in Paris under the renowned academic painter William Bourguereau. That same year, he settled in Munich, which became his base for nearly a quarter-century and where he was part of the vibrant German art scene. His paintings from this period exhibit a crossover between academic realism and early Impressionism, with a focus on color, atmosphere, and light.
In the Flower Fields stands as a testament to Herrmann’s evolving style, balancing precise academic detail with the lower light-suffused brushwork characteristic of Impressionism. Featuring a panoramic floral landscape, In the Flower Fields is possibly inspired by the flower fields in Holland – a motif also seen in other paintings he made during this period.
