Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a pioneering German-American architect and designer, celebrated as one of the foremost figures of modernist architecture. Known for his minimalist aesthetic and the maxim "less is more," Mies emphasized clarity, structural integrity, and the use of modern materials such as steel and glass. His influential designs, including the Barcelona Pavilion, the Farnsworth House, and New York’s Seagram Building (with Philip Johnson), embody a refined elegance rooted in rational geometry and open spatial concepts. As director of the Bauhaus before its closure and later head of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Mies helped shape 20th-century architectural thought and education.

Description

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair is one of the most iconic and significant designs of all time. Interestingly, it was designed for the German pavilion at the 1929 Exposition in Barcelona, Spain. The idea was for a modern design but also to be symbol of the German royal family’s presence at the event. Almost a 100 years later its minimalist form conveys elegance, comfort and a clean design that will endure.

Our 2 chairs have the classic X shaped stainless steel frame and off white or cream-colored upholstery. One of the chairs has the identifying Knoll labels underneath as well as the Knoll logo fabric. Highly likely that the second chair which matches well, was ordered to go with the original Knoll chair and the Ottomans ordered at the same time. This color in the chair is appealing and desirable.
