Bentley has exhibited nationally at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, Denver Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery, San Francisco Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art and has work included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
Description
“To preserve the initial impulse, I like to finish as quickly as possible… As I work, I like to build the painting to a crescendo of activity while retaining areas of rest, of inactivity.”
– Claude Bentley
Torn and layered hand-made and laid papers of various tones collaged with bits of cardboard and heavy bond papers, over and underpainted in washes and impasto oil, combine for a very attractive and satisfying composition. Possibly referencing a seaport, inlet, or other waterscape, Bentley leaves it up to the viewer to decide the nature of the composition by avoiding overt references and simply titling it Objects in a Landscape.
provenance
Estate of Claude Bentley until 2022
