Description

Eve is a mature work realized late in De Lue’s career.  Having gone to France during World War I, De Lue stayed there for some time and made an attempt to visit Rodin’s studio in Meudon.  While De Lue often cited that he was greatly influenced by Michelangelo’s sculpture, it is clear that he was also influenced by Rodin.  Eve bears a strong resemblance to Rodin’s striking Crouching Woman, a piece De Lue would clearly have been aware of and would possibly have thought of when modeling this form.  Her pose suggests that she is a “fallen” Eve and in despair of her situation.  She is a classic De Lue figure in the mass, strength and slightly Deco stylization of the form.  What refines the piece and marks De Lue as a master sculptor is the contrast of the thin and elongated toes and fingers to the broadly defined muscles and shape of the woman.
